With just under a week to go before our party with Brazilian collective Sonido Trópico, we asked two of our DJs, Contours (Rhythm Section) & ElPeche (Sonido Trópico) for the night to give us a taste of what’s to come.
This party is all about bringing the atmosphere and energy of Sonido’s parties in São Paulo to the London scene. Together we’ve considered every aspect, creating an exchange between emerging British and Brazilian artists in music, VJing, video & installation art. And the DJs are coming from all across the globe!
The first British musician we thought to get involved was Manchester based percussionist, DJ and producer, Contours. He is a rhythm wizard. Like the Sonido Trópico DJs, he is drawn to fusions between the organic and the electronic. Having grown up playing drums and listening to a huge range of eclectic music, he incorporates the sounds and rhythms from Africa and Latin America, coupled with those often heard spilling out of dark sweaty basement clubs.
His sound has seen him find a home on London’s Rhythm Section imprint, alongside Al Dobson Jr, Henry Wu and Chaos in the CBD. For our party this Saturday, he’ll be focusing on his Latin American influences, seeing where the night takes him. Have a listen to the mix he’s made us, tracks listed below.
Tracks in order: Friends from Rio – Batacuda Bidu, GuGu – AC Riddim, Contours – Loose Wood (Ross from Friends remix), Mike Huckaby – Radiance, Afronaut – Nuevo Rumbera, Trinidadian Deep & Mikki Afflick – Again, Billy Cobham – El Barrio, Erik Cosaque – Kominike.
Our main collaborator from Sonido is DJ and producer ElPeche, who we interviewed in the lead up to his headline set at this year’s festival. Growing up between London and São Paulo, he has a unique appreciation of how these worlds can come together. Hear some of his inspirations and get into the groove with this mix.
