Andrew Ashong is a British-Ghanaian soul singer-songwriter, DJ and producer from south London whose approach to music making and support for DIY artists has been a major inspiration to us for years.
We’ve been struck by the beauty of his song-writing – tunes like ‘Flowers‘ with Theo Parrish, or ‘Special‘ have been go-to records for both unstoppable dancing and peaceful mindstates ever since they dropped. Now, we’re very humbled to have him with us at Brainchild for a live set as the sun goes down on our Saturday night.
With Andrew it’s not just the music but his whole creative attitude that’s got us excited. For us, he stands for celebrating diversity in artistic approaches and for strengthening community within music. We will also most definitely be inviting him to bring some picks from his incredible vinyl collection to our Open Decks session at the Steez Café on the Sunday afternoon.
His first solo release, on Theo Parrish’s label Sound Signature, and ‘Flowers‘ won Gilles Peterson’s ‘Track of the Year’ at the 2013 Worldwide Awards. When asked, what is behind the excitement of this record, Theo Parrish said, “The Funk. Right under my nose were all the essential elements: simplicity, drive, and honesty gained from heartfelt experience in Andrew Ashong’s music. It’s more than just that. It’s human.”
