Our next dose of Essential Remedies comes from our NYC/Berlin homie duendita.
It’s fair to say that duendita lives a way of making art that is entirely hers; it is fluid and honest, without preconception or hard limits. It feels like the most natural thing in the world, that her ideas, melodies and lyrics are just effortlessly weaved in with her honesty, bravery & insight. We seriously recommend listening to (and buying!) her EP, ‘Direct Line to My Creator‘, and whenever you next can seeing her live (if you can’t, then we very much hope she’ll be returning to Brainchild in 2021) and reading up her interviews (like this Pitchfork piece) or her essay ‘ in gal-dem‘s book, ‘I will Not Be Erased‘.
One Book
‘Build Yourself a Boat‘ by Camonghe Felix is a collection of poetry that is constantly changing my life and holding me down. The story told throughout the work hits close to home, exploring coming of age themes from the perspective of a growing young black girl. Camonghne’s voice is so strong and lovely, I can read her work over and over again.

One Record
‘Own Pace‘ is a rap album by Brooklyn artist Medhane. This record has been on repeat since its release and I’m sure it’s made me stronger. I’m obsessed with the song “Affirmation #1”, Medhane’s words and rhythms are soothing and hopeful. I’m holding onto this music during these uncertain times.

One More Thing
Lastly, I will add that I’ve been making Rice Krispie Treats, which are so delicious. You can make them too!
- Melt 8 tablespoons of butter in a pot
- Add a bag of marshmallows
- When the marshmallows are melted down, add Rice Krispies or your favorite cereal.
- Lay the mixture out on in a flat pan and when it dries, you’ll have yummy bars!
